COMBUSTION SYSTEM & NEW CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
The main focus of Hiltner Combustion Systems is collaboration with clients to bring new internal combustion engine systems to market and improve those already in production. This goal is realized through a combination of engine testing, bench scale component testing, cycle simulation, analysis of test and simulation results, implementation of advanced controls, development of new concepts, and application of a fundamental understanding of combustion physics, chemistry, and thermodynamics to modern engine systems. The evaluation and implementation of new ideas is combined seamlessly with the optimization of current technology related to combustion, controls, after-treatment, and system level performance.
CONTROL SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
Increasingly sophisticated combustion systems, offering higher specific power output, lower emissions, and increased thermal efficiency inevitably call for improved engine control systems. This is particularly true for highly charged, lean burn, spark ignited engines. Hiltner Combustion Systems works directly with engine manufacturers to develop and deploy new control algorithms, hardware and software for both steady state and transient engine operation.
SIMULATION TOOLS
Despite the availability of several off-the-shelf engine system simulation packages, new concepts and special applications often call for custom simulation tools. Hiltner Combustion Systems works directly with companies in the engine industry to develop cycle simulation, engine control systems simulation, and other computational tools tailored to their specific needs. Completing these projects on budget, on time, with constant input from end users and with an eye towards future modification makes for useful and powerful tools that allow development engineers to optimize their future products. HCS can develop a thermodynamic or system level model of virtually any combustion system to allow development and optimization to proceed prior to and in concert with hardware development and testing.
SPECIAL APPLICATIONS & END-USE COMMISSIONING
The stationary gas engine market is rapidly expanding to include a substantial number of ‘special applications’ that are not well served by large engine OEM’s. Challenging fuel compositions, unique site conditions, stringent emissions regulations and increasingly severe transient response requirements are all evolving at a rate that often requires custom engineering for a given site. This may include fuel preparation, engine modification, sub-system development, after-treatment integration and system level controls of the entire plant. HCS works with dealerships, packagers and end users to develop optimum solutions for a given site within the financial and other real world constraints.
